A native of Simsbury, Connecticut, Dr. Thorne received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. As an undergraduate, he was honored with a Howard Hughes Research Fellowship and studied abroad at the University of Regensburg in Germany. After graduation, he remained at Wesleyan to pursue a master’s degree in developmental and stem cell biology.
Dr. Thorne went on to receive his medical school training at The University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut. While in med school, something happened that would change the direction of his career.
“My first year of med school, my sister went through IVF, and I was very drawn to the emotional and medical side of it,” Dr. Thorne said. “The discipline was always in the back of my mind after that.”
After completing medical school, Dr. Thorne stayed on at The UConn School of Medicine to receive his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. During this period, he conducted research with Dr. James Segar at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and was honored with the Dr. James Egan Outstanding Resident Research Award, among other awards and recognitions.
Having made the decision to specialize in REI, Dr. Thorne remained at Uconn for his REI fellowship training. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he continued his research pursuits and gained further accolades, including having an award-winning presentation at the ASRM Scientific Congress and achieving a master’s in clinical and translational research. He also gained a passion for teaching and enjoys working with students during their medical training.
