Reproductive Medicine Associates (RMA) in Somerset, New Jersey, proudly welcomes Adina Schwartz, MD, FACOG, to the team. Dr. Schwartz’s interest in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) was sparked early in life, and today, she pairs her professional expertise as an REI provider with her personal experience as an IVF patient and partner. This unique combination empowers her to offer the most advanced, evidence-based care in a supportive and empathetic way.
Inspired by the innovative nature of this ever-evolving field, Dr. Schwartz’s expertise is further informed by her specialized training, research, and professional interests. She trained in fertility preservation at the National Institutes of Health, and her research interests include embryology techniques and fibroid treatment. She also has in-depth knowledge of medical conditions that can impact fertility, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), and she has a professional interest in serving the LGBTQ community.
Dr. Schwartz’s commitment to her patients and advancing the field of REI is also evident in her numerous accomplishments and awards. These accolades include earning the Excellence In-Training Research Award at the PCRS Annual Conference in 2022 and the Harvey E. Nussbaum Research Grant in 2017. A publication she co-authored on the critical appraisal of studies on endometrial thickness and embryo transfer outcomes was also recognized as the Editor’s Choice by Reproductive BioMedicine Online in 2023.
Raised in New Jersey, Dr. Schwartz attended college at the University of Maryland, where she was part of the Gemstone Honors research program, was selected for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship, and was named a Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar. After graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in neurobiology, she returned to New Jersey to attend Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), where she served as president of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) branch at NJMS.
Dr. Schwartz then completed her OBGYN residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. She participated in multiple research projects with the OBGYN department at NJMS and RMA New Jersey. After finishing her residency, she worked as the gynecology staff clinician in the REI department at the National Institutes of Health and completed her REI fellowship there.
Looking back, Dr. Schwartz’s journey to becoming a fertility specialist almost seems predestined. Before she was born, her parents were told they would never be able to conceive and should consider adoption. But at their first appointment with a reproductive endocrinologist, they were surprised to find out that her mother was pregnant with her. While Dr. Schwartz was deemed their “miracle baby,” it took several years of fertility treatments for her parents to become pregnant with her sister. Their openness about their journey helped ignite Dr. Schwartz’s interest in pregnancy and fertility, and she started medical school to specialize in fertility.
While Dr. Schwartz was first introduced to the field of REI through her parents, she provides care through her own experience as well. Both she and her wife went through in vitro fertilization (IVF) to conceive, and they had multiple failed cycles and miscarriages along the way before their two children. The journey Dr. Schwartz walked as a patient and a partner means she knows firsthand the roller-coaster of emotions patients can go through during infertility treatment, and this unique perspective enables her to empathize with patients every step of the way as she helps them build their families.
This desire to build relationships with patients while providing the highest quality of care drew Dr. Schwartz to RMA. As someone who grew up in New Jersey and wanted to specialize in fertility, she set her sights on one day working at RMA and was thrilled to see her dream come true. She finds RMA’s commitment to patient care and reproductive research inspiring, and she is honored to work with such a remarkable team of experts.
Dr. Schwartz finds joy in her love of sports and the outdoors when not in the office. She always looks for new hikes to explore with her wife and children. Growing up, she played basketball and softball and is an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Rangers, and Giants. In fact, before knowing she wanted to specialize in REI, she dreamed of being the first woman to play for the New York Yankees.
In addition, Dr. Schwartz is eager to travel the world and wants to experience as many places as possible through their art, music, history, and food. She can harmonize to any song, thanks to her experience as a founding cappella group member in college.
Whether patients bond with Dr. Schwartz over a shared interest in sports or explore different cultures, they will also feel seen, heard, and guided by her. She is passionate about bringing awareness to infertility and growing a supportive community where people can come together and feel advocated for and validated.
