IVF can be a long process but it’s well worth the rewards. Most patients have no side effects, but some experience bloating and slight cramping. The egg retrieval requires anesthesia in order to make the procedure painless and most women have discomfort similar to menstrual cramps for a day or two. For most women, IVF is well tolerated. There are always exceptions to the rule, particularly if a woman over responds and develops ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Luckily, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of OHSS – at RMANJ, our OHSS rate is less than 1 percent! At the end of the day, IVF is a difficult process but well worth it considering the high chances of success that are possible given advances in assisted reproductive technology.
