Reproductive Medicine Associates of Philadelphia’s Dr. Jackie Gutmann joined a multidisciplinary panel of leaders in the fields of psychology, health care and faith at a recent event in Philadelphia for an important cause: to give hope to people of color struggling with infertility.
Ending the Stigma
The nationwide tour, called Breaking the Silence was sponsored by Fertility for Colored Girls (FFCG), a reproductive health advocacy organization based in Matteson, Illinois, whose mission is “to provide education, awareness, support and encouragement to African American women/couples and other women of color experiencing infertility and seeking to build the families of their dreams. Additionally, FFCG seeks to empower African American women to take charge of their fertility and reproductive health.” The day was dedicated to eliminating the culture of silence and stigma surrounding infertility by providing education and a safe place for women of color to share their stories. “Many African-American women are less likely to seek infertility treatment due to stereotypes, misinformation, cultural stigma and lack of resources,” said Rev. Dr. Stacey Edwards-Dunn, founder of FFCG.
Seeking Treatment
Dr. Gutmann spoke about the advancements in infertility care and all the treatment options available for couples and individuals struggling to build their families. Dr. Gutmann provided a wealth of information on Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), egg freezing, gestational surrogacy, egg, sperm and embryo donation, and adoption. “Recognizing that each patient’s circumstances, both medical and otherwise, are unique, allows us to provide treatment plans that are individualized. Patients are encouraged to ask questions and to partner in their care to ensure that their concerns and needs are being met,” said Dr. Jackie Gutmann.
Gift of Hope
In addition to being a source of fertility information for women of color, FFCG also seek to provide financial assistance to needy, infertile families.
