Myomectomy

A myomectomy is a surgical procedure that is performed to remove uterine fibroids or benign tumors in the uterus. Diagnosed through ultrasound or laparoscopy, fibroids occur when one uterine muscle cell replicates itself too many times, creating a small “ball” of tissue in the uterus. While these tumors are not life-threatening, they can push into the uterine cavity, decreasing the chance of pregnancy and increasing the risk of miscarriage. In addition, they affect a woman’s quality of life by causing menstrual problems, discomfort, and infertility.

What to Expect

If a patient is diagnosed with fibroids or any benign tumors are detected, the physician may schedule a myomectomy to remove them. A myomectomy can be performed in three different ways. The size, number, and location of the fibroids will determine whether the patient needs an abdominal myomectomy, a laparoscopic myomectomy, or a hysteroscopic myomectomy. All three surgeries are done while the patient is under general anesthesia.

Interpreting Myomectomy Results

The doctor will be able to report the results immediately after surgery, however, healing can take up to six weeks depending on which procedure is done. In addition, once pregnant, precautions should be taken when deciding whether to give birth naturally or through C-section. The physician can better advise the patient while reviewing the results during a follow-up visit.
