In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization (IVF) stands out as the most successful fertility treatment available for couples facing challenges getting and staying pregnant.

IVF involves combining eggs and sperm in an embryology lab and then transferring the embryo to the uterus. With high success rates, IVF addresses various fertility issues, offering many the chance to become parents. Advances in Assisted Reproductive Technology continue to improve its safety and effectiveness.

The IVF Process

The IVF process may seem complicated at first glance, but it is relatively straightforward, with six simple steps.

Ovarian Stimulation

During an IVF cycle, daily injections of ovarian stimulation medications are administered over 8-12 days to encourage the development of multiple eggs in the ovaries.

Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs have matured, doctors retrieve the eggs from the ovaries. This quick process takes about 5-10 minutes at RMA and is painless because you'll be under anesthesia. Most women can go home about an hour later.

Extended Embryo Culture

In an IVF lab, embryos grow for up to seven days until they become blastocysts, which means they have about 200 cells. Keeping the embryos in the lab for 5-7 days improves their chances of attaching to the womb, leading to a successful pregnancy.

Path 31821@2x

Embryo Biopsy

If a patient decides to have genetic testing, a small sample is carefully removed from the embryo to analyze its DNA. This procedure is intricate and requires an expert embryologist.

Preimplantation Genetic Testing

If a patient decides to have genetic testing, a small sample is carefully removed from the embryo to analyze its DNA. This procedure is intricate and requires an expert embryologist.

Frozen Embryo Transfer

The embryo is frozen until the uterus is ready for implantation. Frozen embryo transfers are preferred over fresh transfers due to an observed increase in implantation rates and improved obstetrical outcomes. Once the embryo is transferred into the woman's uterus the IVF cycle is complete.
