Endometriosis

What is Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic organs, leading to pain, inflammation, and, in many cases, infertility.

While endometriosis affects an estimated 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, its symptoms can vary widely. Some individuals experience severe pelvic pain and heavy periods, while others may have no noticeable symptoms. Despite this variability, endometriosis is one of the leading causes of infertility, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for those looking to conceive.

How Does Endometriosis Cause Infertility?

Endometriosis can impact fertility in multiple ways:

  • Inflammation & Scarring: Chronic inflammation can create scar tissue (adhesions) that distorts the reproductive organs, making it difficult for eggs to reach the fallopian tubes.
  • Ovarian Reserve Reduction: Endometriosis can damage the ovaries, leading to a decreased ovarian reserve (fewer healthy eggs available for fertilization).
  • Hormonal Imbalances: The condition can interfere with normal hormonal function, affecting ovulation and egg quality.
  • Embryo Implantation Issues: Endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus may create an inhospitable environment for embryo implantation, reducing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Diagnosing Endometriosis & Fertility Challenges

Many women with endometriosis are unaware they have it until they struggle to conceive. If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for over six months without success, it’s essential to seek an evaluation from a fertility specialist.

Diagnosis often involves:

  • A pelvic exam to check for cysts or tenderness
  • Ultrasound or MRI to detect ovarian endometriomas
  • Laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgery, to confirm and assess the severity of the condition
